photo 4 (4)Per the Newell tradition we spent Thanksgiving up at my sister’s house.  She lives with her husband, two kids, and puppy in a small town named Oakhurst just south of the Yosemite border.  Riggins and I drove up Tuesday and stuck around having fun until we left on Saturday.  That means I spent a number of days with two kids and two dogs.  Here are a few of my experiences.

photo 3 (11)RIGGINS – One of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is Riggins comes back being a cuddlebug for the next few days.  In general Riggins isn’t a cuddiler.  No one believes me since he becomes King of the Cuddles when people come to visit us but when it is just him and me (or him, me and a gaggle of other dogs) he spends his time sitting at the front door or laying in his secret spot in the living room.  It really isn’t that secret but it is where he goes to hide when he is about to get a bath or when he knows he is going to be put outside.  Apparently he doesn’t think I can see him behind a dinning room table.  At my sister’s house he has to prove that he is number one and to do that he spends all his free time in a humans lap.  My dad, mom, sister, brother-in-law, niece and I are all used as a place to snuggle up.  My nephew manages to stay clear of Riggins cuddles.  I suppose Riggins can’t pin him down long enough to make it worth his while.  When we get home the next few days are cuddle magic.  When I’m watching TV he will hop up on the sofa and instead of going as far away from me as possible he will come and plop down right on my lap.  I love it!

(Side note – Riggins always wants to cuddle in the early morning.  He will jump up on my bed and lay down so that his back is too me and look over his shoulder as if to say, “hey lady … here I am … get to the snuggling.” )

photo 2KIRA – Kira is my 4-year-old niece.  At least I think she is 4.  I’m really not sure.  Don’t judge me.  I had Riggins age incorrect for almost an entire year once.  I’m obviously not paying attention.  Kira and Riggins are BFF so every morning (early morning) Kira would come into her room, where I was sleeping, and jump in bed to snuggle.  If Riggins wasn’t there yet it didn’t take him long for him to join the party.  Kira has a twin bed so this is a very squishy situation.  Kira was quick to inform me that her and Riggins were going to sleep at the top of the bed on the pillow and I could sleep below them.  Because I’m a good aunt and was really tired I’d shimmy down until my head was below feet and paws and would try to sleep for a little longer.  One morning Kira stole the blanket I was using informing me that Riggins was cold and needed it.  Sigh!

Kira loves me.  I think it is because I always answer “what” to her “guess what” questions which are thrown at me all the time but seem concentrated in those early morning hours.   Sometimes they are mumbled in my sleep but I still always manage to say, “What?”  For example:

Aunt Wendy guess what?  What?  Did you know Riggins is really soft?  I did!

Aunt Wendy guess what?  What?  Did you know Riggins was your baby?  That’s right he is!

Aunt Wendy guess what?  What?  You have aunt in your name.  True.

Aunt Wendy guess what?  What?  Your sister is my mommy.  She sure is.

This goes on for a very long time.  Kira was also quick to point out when she saw me that I had white hair and that people with white hair are weird and annoying.  What can I say to that?

photo 1On Thanksgiving I put her hair in Indian braids but she demanded I use 5 different colored hair bands.  For people who don’t do little girls hair that is 3 too many.  One by one I asked her where the extra ones went expecting her to just bounce between both braids.  On the last one she pointed to her bangs.  Fair enough.  I whipped them up off her face and secured them with the 5th hair band.  A few minutes later I was putting on my make up and she decided she wanted some too.  I did what any good aunt would do and one by one handed her lipstick, blush and eyeshadow for her to apply to her teeny tiny face.  When we were both done I exclaimed we were beautiful while her mom told me that she looked like Cindy Lou Who as a hooker and this was not to happen the next day when family pictures were being taken.  During dinner, hours after her make up had worn off due to extreme play time, she leaned over to me and whispered, “Aunt Wendy.  Do I still have lipstick on?”  I lied and said yes and she smiled big and went back to eating.

photo 1 (17)LOGAN – (BTW I have to tell you I’m having a real hard time with my caps lock key.  You see the other day I cut my toe nails and somehow, I don’t know how, one of the clippings got under the caps lock key on my keyboard and now doesn’t want to work correctly.  Lesson?  Don’t cut your nails by your computer.)  My nephew is 6.  I think.  He is all boy … a very tiny boy.  He loves Legos and anything Lego-ish.  I had been informed that he wanted to take a hike so one day we went for a “hike.”  If I was being honest it was really a walk but both Kira and Logan explained to me what a long hike it was so I guess we will call it a hike.  At one point we went into the park where my sister and brother-in-law got married.  I pointed to the gazebo and asked, “do you know what happened there?”  After a few guesses that were incorrect I said, “your mom and dad got married there.”  WHAT??????  Logan and his sister could not believe it.  They ran up and explained to me where everyone stood.  Then Logan looked at me and with all honesty said, “I sure wish there was a TV in my moms stomach so I could have seen that.”

Later in our “hike” we went past a school and saw a blue heron on the field.  In no time at all Logan whipped out his binoculars for his sister and his pirate spy glass for him out of his backpack.  He then demanded we all crouch low so they could observe the bird.  At first I didn’t comply and instead stood back as they crouched behind some tall grass.  That was until Logan caught me and demanded not only that I get down but that Riggins sit down too.  After awhile I suggested they try to get closer so Logan careful went forward waving his sister on behind him.  They got to a fence and stood behind it watching the bird.  At one point the heron started walking …. away.  Logan broke his concentration and started screaming running back to me that the bird was going to get them!  A few steps later when we were all reflecting on the amazing piece of nature we had just seen he told me he wish he had a gun so he could have shot and eaten that bird.  I’m pretty sure you aren’t allowed to hunt blue herons but if you do I suppose eating them is the responsible thing to do.

photo 2 (17)CAPTAIN SHADOW – My sister’s family has a new puppy.  Captain Shadow.  If you have never raised a puppy you don’t know.  If you raised a puppy awhile back you have forgotten.  Puppies are nuts.  Captain Shadow was actually very well-behaved while in the house (he was a mess on leash since he is too young to go out much).  His only downfall was his need to chew.  Chew anything and everything BUT his favorite thing to chew is you.  Chomp chomp chomp.  Since he isn’t with his brothers and sisters anymore he hasn’t learned that difference between playful chewing and biting.  He doesn’t care.  He just knows he has puppy teeth and he needs to use them.  I don’t remember Riggins being like that.  Obviously I’ve forgotten.  I remember him chewing on things and destroying the apartment we lived in but I don’t remember him biting me.  My mom tells me I’m wrong.  I’m sure she is right and I’m just forgetting that my baby isn’t perfect.

Speaking of my baby, Riggins didn’t have much time for his young cousin.  He tolerated him until he was done tolerating him and then he told the kid to back off.  Captain Shadow did a pretty good job of giving his cousin distance when needed although it took him a couple of times to figure out not to go near anything Riggins was eating or could eat.

I, on the other hand, love Captain Shadow and was more than happy when he wanted to cuddle up next to me and keep me warm.  Soon he will be bigger than Riggins … we will see who the boss is then!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  Time to get ready for Christmas.

Josh and his mom

I don’t have any children (human) but I’m surrounded by my fake nieces and nephews (as well as the real thing).  One of the eldest is Josh Levitt (you know his mom from her guest blog).  He is sweet, kind, smart and all around a great kid.  Last weekend I was at a birthday party with his mom and the topic of Catalina came up … as it does.  Of course I asked her if she had seen the news about the giant ugly fish that had been found offshore and not only had she seen it she knew way more about it than me (which wasn’t hard since my knowledge ended there).  Turns out Josh had written an article on the topic for his weekly news based homework.  Each week the students in Josh’s 5th grade class have to find an article in the news then research it to write a short factual summary along with a different person’s perspective of the event.  Genius I say!  Well done teacher!  I would be in love with this assignment if I was in Josh’s class.  Creative writing and fact-finding.  I’m giddy just thinking about it.  In fact I think I’m going to go write one right now!

Please enjoy Josh’s write-up below (It’s called The Watson Weekly which I’m sure means something but I didn’t ask what):

The Article:

Giant oarfish found off Catalina to be split for research

By Samantha Schaefer

Splash. Splash. A rare oarfish has washed up on Catalina. This rare fish was seen by a snorkeler about 20 feet underwater. The fish was dead, and it’s not the only one.

Another oarfish washed up in Oceanside, north of San Diego. This was found Friday, and is currently being examined. The other one is among the largest in 20 years, at an impressive 18 feet long. That’s longer than two people laying down, in a line!

This is not common, nor rare for this to happen. In 2010, another one washed ashore in Malibu. It was small, only 12 feet, or at least small for an oarfish.

Oarfish normally live at 700-3,000 feet deep in the water, so if they come up, it’s normally because of storms or starvation, which is bad.

Since oarfish are so long, scientists think we might have an answer to all the “sea serpent rumors” that have been a mystery for ages.

The oarfish will be dissected and sent to scientists all around the world for study. This fish proves that there is always bigger fish to fry, or find.

Multiple Perspectives:

When I found the fish, I swam near. That’s when I noticed the length of it. This was not normal. For one, I had not seen this peculiar type of before, so I was surprised. Second, when I saw it, it was dead.

I wasn’t sure what to do. After all, I’m just a snorkeler, not a scientist. So here’s what I did. I brought the dead fish up to the surface. Scientists were called to look at the fish.

Meanwhile, the other fish had washed up in San Diego. That was a different fish, but it was an oarfish nonetheless. I wonder if the two fish are related in what happened, but since they were found at almost the same time, I’m assuming that they are.

People remember the first thing that happened. That’s the way we are. So we only dissected the Catalina oarfish, not the San Diego one. People remember me for being the guy who found it, but I’m just a snorkeler.

This incident made me wonder if there are multiple oarfish down there, sitting ducks for hunters. We’ve had four washouts in the last 20 years, so I’m concerned. Good thing I’m a snorkeler, so I’ll keep my eyes peeled for oarfish.

Trends:

Catalina in the distance as seen from Runyon this morning.

Catalina in the distance as seen from Runyon this morning.

This oarfish has opened a door to a lot more questions in science. Normally, oarfish stay at greater depths, about 700-3000 feet below sea level. Therefore, finding one is uncommon, but not that uncommon.

Both oarfish found were already dead, so scientists wonder what happened. Did it die by starvation? Did it perish by being hunted? What else could have happened?

It seems like oarfish have been washing up from time to time recently: year-round recently. Two oarfish in 2013, one in 2010, and one in 1996.

If we had gigantic oxygen tanks, we could go deeper into the water and see what’s up the oarfish. However, since we don’t, we’re left with few options.

The option the scientists chose was to split it and send it to other scientists for study. Maybe then will we find the solution to the mystery, but until then, we have to stick with the clues.

Thanks Josh!  I hope you will share more of your articles with us.  You did a great job and your perspective from the divers eyes is a lot more eloquent than what I would have written it.  Mine would have just said, “It scared the poop out of me!”

39 Acts of Kindness – 36, 37 and 38

Act of Kindness, babysitting, Drinking, kids, Mushugana, Shamrock, St. Patrick's Day

Ooooooohhhhhh …… after this weekend’s kindness acts I’m soooooooo close to my goal! image (2) I’ve had one blow out of a St. Patrick’s Day weekend, that’s for sure. I’m writing this post Sunday night to publish Monday morning. After writing this I plan to chug some pepto bismo and pass out! I think I’ve managed to survive the 10 million different alcohols. Although I have to admit the thought of Creme de Minthe makes me nauseous right now. It’s the horrible diet that has been my undoing! I essentially consumed pizza from Friday night to Saturday night then moved on to a taste of this and a taste of that, ending today with a giant platter of liquid cheese nachos. I didn’t even order the nachos I ate other people’s nachos and couldn’t stop! It was so yummy until my stomach told me it was really not at all happy with my decisions! So I have to type fast and move on to the remainder of my evening on the sofa.

image#36 – Darlin’ Children. It didn’t take long for my friend to jump on the kindness bandwagon and suggest I babysit for her to help fulfill my quota of niceness. Of course I said yes! I spent midday Saturday with two adorable little boys Gavin and Griffin. Our few hours together were spent making St. Patrick’s Day cards, green tissue flowers, and chasing Mushugana, the 8-year-old dog that I’m currently babysitting (them chasing, me sheltering her from the chasing). I’ve known both these boys since their birth and it’s amazing at how big they are getting. I know that is a generic thing that everyone says but everyone says it because it’s true! Soon I expect that Gavin will be able to drive me around town to do errands. (BTW based on these pictures I assume Gavin’s mom and dad have spent the last 24 hours listening to how great it would be if they owned a dog!)

Shug (Mushugana’s name with more street cred) and I returned later that evening tophoto (6) partake in my friend’s bi-annual drink competition. This one was, obviously, St. Patrick’s Day themed. I made a shot I named the Fresh Little Leprechaun. It was an equal part mix of chocolate vodka, white chocolate liquor, and a dash of Creme de Menthe (shocking). I topped it with crumbled Girl Scout Thin Mints (part of my two ingredient minimum requirement from a long list of possible edible/drinkable items) and added a custom-made (by me) toothpick stabbed through thin mints. Delicious! I didn’t win but I didn’t lose and that was my goal!

#37 – Expert Packs. My friends, Dee Dee and Krissy and I have been planning to go all out for St. Patrick’s Day for a few weeks now. We just couldn’t pass up the holiday falling on a Sunday and although I consider us a pretty fun crew none of us had done St. Patrick’s day “right” before. That needed to be fixed! Knowing that it is a drinking holiday and therefore drinking would be happening I decided the gang needed some first aid kits. I packed up some aspirin, added a sports drink and threw in some green beads for good measure. Since we were getting an early start I put these together the night before. Let me tell you the gals where sure happy to get them and no one got through today without downing a package of Advil!

photo (5)#38 – I said NO PINCHING. Ions ago I had purchased a packet of shamrock stickers from Michael’s at an oddly low price. So low I have to assume the were mis-marked. My goal was to leave them on a park bench near the pool I swim at but there was no way I was getting up even earlier to make that happen. Instead I decided to leave them at the subway station. More foot traffic there anyway! Although my goal wasn’t to drink too much, I’m a responsible adult and had decided I needed to find a non self-driven way to downtown LA and our celebration. Unfortunately, some brilliant planner decided to schedule the LA Marathon on St. Patrick’s Day. This may mean nothing to you but if you live in LA you know that the race road closures essentially isolate the North and South sides of the city. There was no way for a car to get me into downtown at the agreed upon meeting time of 8AM. So I jumped in a taxi and headed off to the Metro (subway) station. Once there I grabbed a ticket and headed downstairs. I found a centrally located bench and tied my bowl of stickers and it’s coordinated sign to it. Then I walked the platform handing out stickers to those in need. It was so much fun. Everyone was so happy. One little girl asked if I was a fairy (probably due to the green wig I had on). One woman asked if I was a city ambassador. Ummm … no to both but I should definitely be a fairy ambassador. That would be an excellent title on a business card.
image (2)

Luck was on my side and my subway car stopped RIGHT IN FRONT OF DEE DEE AND KRISSY who were picking it up a few stops down. Amazed we joined forces and kept on the sticker give away plan for the rest of the day. We had a blast spreading joy, happiness and green!

We did St. Patrick’s Day right! I’ll leave you with just a few pics as proof:

Fluff (As Promised)

18 Friday Jan 2013

dad, kids, kira, logan, mom, nephew, niece, Riggins

logan and rigginsAfter yesterdays downer of a post I promised you fluff today. So here you go! What is fluffier than kids and dogs. I dare say nothing!

Riggins has never really been a kid friendly dog. It isn’t his fault. He just never had any children around him when he was growing up. When I moved into my current house I had a housewarming party and one of my good friends brought her adorable baby boy to the party. He sat, like a cute blob, in one of my outdoor folding chairs and Riggins would have none of it. He circled that kid, head down butt up, and growled and growled. I usually say Riggins doesn’t like kids because of their frantic energy or high-pitched squealing (let’s face it both those things bother us too it just isn’t social acceptable to put our butt up in the air and growl at them) or the fact that they are at his height staring right into his eyes and heading straight for him in what he translates into an attack. None of that explains why he growled at my friends baby. That poor kid wasn’t even old enough to talk. He was literally just sitting there barely moving.

You can imagine my concern when my sister had her children. I took time off of work when my nephew was born so I could be with them. After Logan was born I spent two nights in my sister’s house on my own discussing with Riggins that he was not to eat the new baby. I did all those things you read about. Brought a blanked (or something) to have him sniff before meeting Logan, etc. I have to say it was a shock how he reacted. He was cool with the kid. When my niece was born he was cool with her as well. I was shocked. I can only assume he could feel that they were family and more importantly if he did something to hurt one of them he would be up a creek without a paddle!

We have had our ups and downs. Riggins was extremely jealous of any attention the kids got. If there was a baby on your lap you can guarantee Riggins was trying to sneak up on your lap too. He was a master of pushing his nose under the lump of baby and wiggling his way in between the two humans. He still is jealous but as the kids grow it has gotten better. When we are home he can go weeks without wanting to come up on the couch with me and snuggle, preferring to spend his time in front of the open door or curled up in the dark under the dinning room table. Then we get to my sister’s house and he has to prove he is my baby. Most of the time during our visit he can be found draping himself on my lap.

I still have to remind both kids that running = playing. They seem to like being chased by the big black dog at first until they realize the next part of play is a tackle! We were at the local winery by my sister’s house once where both dogs and kids can run free. Logan took off giggling with Riggins in full flight behind him. Dogs are faster than kids so it was only a matter of a few feet before Riggins took the lead and did so by happily pushing Logan down. He was fine. He is short and his fall was on grass and a zillion autumn leaves but he was shocked and the laughter coming from his family did not help one bit!

The most amazing thing is what he allows my niece, Kira, to get away with. They love each other. When she was younger she would walk around the house behind Riggins with her hand on his butt. She is CONSTANTLY wanting to kiss him. Makes me nervous and Ikira and riggins always have to remind her not to bother Riggins while he is eating or sleeping. He has allowed her to use him as an ottoman and a blanket and once while camping allowed her to put colorful smiley face stickers all over him. Every once in a while he will look up with a “well what do you want me to do? She’s adorable. We all make sacrifices for family” look on his face.

My family and I still watch the kids like a hawk when they are around Riggins. Like I said before dogs are animals and can lash out at anytime but Riggins has shown a level of patience I never expected from him. He has even gotten better with other kids. Better ….. not great!

I hope you enjoyed your end of the work week fluff piece! Have a great weekend.
