Make Another Choice

(This isn’t going to be a particularly popular post to 90% of my friends.  This is a warning to them.  I’m still a good person … honest.)

photo 3 (21)I’m horrible at improv (that’s when you throw actors up on stage and have them make up a scene on the fly).  I can turn any scene into a crying dramatic piece in approximately 49.5 seconds.  Traditionally improv is supposed to be funny and I’m doing the exact opposite, therefore I fail.  Luckily most theatre classes are like Yoga classes.  No judgement zones. The instructor can’t scream, “What the hell is wrong with you?  Why would you say your baby is dead, your husband drowned in the Titanic, and you have the black death?????”  Instead the instructor will look at you nod and say, “That was a choice.  Make another one.”  Hey you may have failed horribly but give it another shot.

That’s what I want to say to the government in response to the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare).   Good for you.  Way to make a choice!  Now make another one.

Before I continue let me get it all out in the open.  I really dislike politics.  It makes me insane and because of that I tend to not spend much time digging into the details as it only makes me more furious.  I am not a Republican nor am I a Democrat.  Much to the dismay of my very Los Angeles (aka Democrat) friends I am registered as “no party affiliation.”   Not Independent.  Independent is a party.  “No party affiliation.”  When I made the decision to do that I read up on all the parties and decided I aligned most with the Green Party but that just seemed silly so I ignored that analysis and just shrugged off all those groups.   I have voted for things that both parties support and I have suggested members of both parties are complete morons.  I’m an equal opportunity non-supporter.  I realize this makes many people crazy … it makes me less crazy.

I also HATE insurance.  Since I have worked for companies that tend to change insurances annually I feel like I’ve had and fought with them all.  I was obviously some sort of evil tax collector in a former life because I have horrible insurance karma.  Everything is a fight.  It just doesn’t seem that hard.  Me (and my employer if I have one) give you money monthly then when I need medical help I get it and you pay most of the bills.  HOW IS THAT HARD TO UNDERSTAND?  A few years back I realized how screwed up the HMO system is when I was denied a test my cardiologist had requested for me.  I really had no idea an insurance company can just say “nope” when a doctor says you need something.  “Nah,” they said, “We will gamble on the fact that you may or may not have a heart attack that could be avoided based on info discovered in this test.  We’ve crunched the numbers.  We are going to roll the dice”  Easy for them to say … it’s not their heart!  For all the BS marketing they do about “wellness” campaigns insurances constantly prove to be “anti-photo 1 (29)wellness” but instead card counting gambling sharks that have gained whale status on our lives.  Speaking of wellness campaigns what brain trust came up with the high deductible insurance idea?  What kind of total bullshit is that?  So I pay you x amount of money a year and then I pay for all my doctor bills until I hit a ridiculously large number and then you take over.  I assume those number crunching gamblers have analyzed the total amount of money each american spends on healthcare per year then adds a few thousand for good luck and that is the deductible they use.  That way the number of people who ACTUALLY have to be paid for under the insurance is as minimal as possible.  Unless I have an emergency I’m paying the insurance company to add up my annual bills.  I have a calculator thank you very much.  I can do the adding up myself.

Mushing politics/government and insurance into one topic is obviously a circle of hell even Dante couldn’t imagine.   Since I am not employed by a company and instead have been paying for COBRA (don’t get me started on COBRA) let me outline my personal issues with the Affordable Care Act.  I realize many of you were not effected by this law/system at all and because of that have no issues with it.  I also realize a few of you had a positive experience.  Write your own blog.  Here is my issues:

* The site is crap.  You heard all about it on the news and I’m here to tell you it is true.  I did the “worksheet” and was super happy that my financial woes, when it came to insurance, was over and then I filled out the site and my cost was the same (or similar enough) to what I was paying for COBRA — aka NOT AFFORDABLE.  Of course to find this out took HOURS of my time since the site kept crashing.  It was infuriating. This is the United States of America home of Apple and Facebook — FIX THE SITE.  FIX IT.  (As of last week I was still having issues with the site so telling me it has been fixed makes you have pants of fire.)

* Prior to Jan 1 I couldn’t even get through the phone line.  It wouldn’t even ring.  After Jan 1 I had to wait over 30 minutes to talk to someone.  This is a RIDICULOUS amount of time.  Hire more people.  HIRE MORE PEOPLE.  You didn’t know you were going to need so many people?  Bullshit.  Get the number crunchers at the insurance companies to help you out with your projected analysis and HIRE MORE PEOPLE.

* Turns out the reason my premium was so high was because I said I had COBRA.  I’m told I misread the question.  Apparently it asked if I have “affordable” healthcare right now.  I have so much to say about this I just can’t … my expensive heart medication can’t take it.

* I could have gotten healthcare for under $100 per month (yah!) if I wanted a 10 million dollar deductible (boo).  Okay it wasn’t actually 10 million dollars but it might as well have been.  This is where I think the Affordable Care Act really missed the mark.  It just isn’t affordable for the people who need it.  Imagine you are one of those people.  You are barely living check to check … if that.  You are trying to get a better job or a job or get help.  You are really trying but it is hell out there right now (believe me it is hell out there right now) so what happens?  The government tells you that you HAVE to have insurance.  You HAVE to have it for your own good.  It’s true.  You would love to have health insurance and certainly you would love your family to have it.  After all you’ve had this nasty cough for a month now and you should probably have it checked out.  You are thrilled to find out that for under $100 you can have insurance.  Praise whatever lord you look to for that sort of thing.  Then you read the policy and understand it has a deductible higher than your rent.  That means if you go to the doctor you have to pay the ENTIRE BILL (granted it will most likely have been negotiated down to the insurance prices but it is still the entire bill).  You will keep paying the entire bill until you hit that crazy high deductible and THEN you have good insurance.  If you don’t have the money for monthly insurance how would you have money to pay for a doctor in the first place.  What the policy is doing is taking away $100/month from your wallet and covering you (minus that large deductible) in case of a health emergency.  It isn’t an Affordable Care Act it’s an Emergency Care Act.

photo 2 (30)Even after all this ranting I did sign up for a policy under Covered California.  It took me a few months to get over the site crashing on me and having to wait to get someone on the phone but I eventually did it.  The policy is not as good as my COBRA but I did choose to pay more monthly and not have a high deductible.  Luckily, unlike others, I had that choice.  I do believe all american’s are entitled to healthcare and I suppose to make that happen the government needs to step in.  I applaud them figuring that much out.  Now they need to make another choice.

(Since you may not be able to afford your anxiety meds here are some pictures of the cutie dogs I’ve been watching this week.  Look at them and meditate peacefully.)

Magic Oil

Coconut oil is magic. I know this because Pinterest told me so and Pinterest would never ever lie to me. A quick Google or Pinterest search should give you an impressive list of uses for this magic oil, many of which I wouldn’t try because I would never think of it and/or the use is just dumb. For example, many will list it as a natural sunscreen of a huge giant SPF of 4ish. 4???? 4???? I slather spf 70 on my face and 50 on my body and I still manage to get burned/tanned/sun damaged. 4???? Don’t make me laugh. I suppose if I was stranded on a desert island with no hope of rescue I’d take a coconut and rub it all over me just to pass some time, but really that’s it.

There is also lots of advice on what kind of coconut oil you should use. I bought the Trader Joe’s a couple of times. The bottle contains the buzz words “organic” and “virgin” so it sounded good to me. Last time I purchased some I was too lazy to make a trip to Trader Joe’s so tossed the brand they have at Ralphs into my cart. The only ingredient listed is coconut oil so that was good enough for me. Works fine. I see/feel no difference.

My use for coconut oil is limited to my hair and body. I tried cooking with it once but it was annoying to measure and liquefying took patience I just don’t have as a chef. Coconut oil will be solid in most of our homes only liquefying at 77 degrees-ish (I could be wrong on the exact temperature … I said “ish” to remain safe and honest.) and above. Before I use it I usually stick the container under some hot running water to liquefy enough for me to slather all over myself. One genius blogger said she keeps hers in the shower and by the time she is finished getting clean it is warm enough to use. Brilliant! That’s now where mine is kept.

Here are my main reasons I like coconut oil:

  • It’s a wonderful hair conditioner. Kinda brilliant in fact. Before going to bed slap some on your head and work it into your scalp/hair. The next morning, after rinsing it out, you will be amazed at your soft locks. The first thing people ask is how you can sleep in bed with a head full of oil. For one, you aren’t dipping your head in it. You put some in your hand and work it around. There isn’t enough to cause any problems. If you don’t believe me put a towel on your pillow. My other tip, if you are worried, do this the night before you change your sheets.
  • As a skin conditioner it works really well. Not the best in the land but pretty good. In fact it has helped the bumps on my upper arms. In the past I’ve used keratosis pilaris lotion along with any other lotion I could get my hands on. Nothing worked that well. The KP lotion was the best but it kinda smells like you are burning your skin off. The other day I noticed that after using coconut oil for a couple of months the bumps are a lot less noticeable. Plus it is much nicer to smell like a mai tai then a burn victim.
  • The number one reason I like using coconut oil for a skin moisturizer is that it makes Round back with Riggins. Strong leg and ab Bar Method muscles allows you to put your dog with your feet!doing round back in Bar Method easier. Hear me out. There is an exercise in Bar Method called round back that targets slimming and elongating your legs as well as working your arm and abs. You sit in front of the wall with your butt a foot or so away so you can lean back against the wall on your shoulders. Then you put one floor flat on the floor and the other lifted as high and as straight as possible. Finally you push both your hands up into the barre over your head. I think round back is one of, if not the most, effective leg tapering exercises in Bar Method. Unfortunately you do need the barre so it isn’t something you can do at home. Anyway, once your leg is as high and as STRAIGHT as you can get it you go through a series of lifts and extends that test your mental endurance not to mention make the top of your thigh (among other things) quiver with the intense effort. In between the 30 one inch lifts or 40 small extends or 30 tiny circles you get to hold back on for a 1/2 of a second to your ankle for a quick reset. This is where coconut oil comes in. when I use lotion on my legs, even if it is hours before, the lotion is doing its job and therefore my hand slips right off my leg. I can’t get a grip which means no short time-out for me! Coconut oil will soak completely into your skin. This doesn’t happen right away so don’t run to take as shower, cover yourself in oil, and then get angry at me because you are all slippery. Give it 30 minutes or so and you will no longer feel like a human slip and slide. Coconut oil allows me to get a firm grip on my ankle and take that miniscule time out that gets me through the rest of the exercise.

The correct way to do round back. If you are super fancy, like the founder of Bar Method in the blue tank, you can be cool and put your non-working let straight out vs. on the floor. Source.

I’ve Got Your Back

CPR, er, friends, health, heart, stress

ry=400Don’t you worry about a thing. As of last night I’m officially up to date on how to administer Adult CPR. Go ahead and drop to the ground without a pulse. I’ve got your back.

The last time I took a CPR class I was a sophomore in College so there is no doubt that things have changed a bit. I’ve been meaning to take the class for a while now but finally have the time. I figure given the age and activity level of my group of friends at least one of us should be in the know! My father was younger than a majority of my current male friends when he had a heart attack. At the time the family was on vacation and we were at the pool of the Circus Circus RV park. I remember very little about what happened. I remember my mom ripping down the motorhome’s awning so she could drive to the hospital. I remember my dad laying down during the drive. I remember sitting in the hospital with my younger sister and being given hospital coloring books to keep busy. I remember my mom calling other people and not being able to talk since she was crying so having to hand the phone to me even though I had nothing to say. Mostly I remember spending time at my Grandma’s house where my cousins and aunt came to visit us and having a blast!

It’s no surprise that during my high stress career I’ve managed to have my own chest pain scares. At one point I realized I had been experiencing chest pains for over a week and was nearly blacking out on the hill that weekend. My mom forced me to make a doctor’s appointment where my blood pressure was so high they didn’t believe the machine was working correctly. The next day driving to work I thought “Something isn’t right I should go to the ER”. It was followed by the thought, “Sigh. I don’t want to go to the ER. What a drag.” That was followed by the thought, “If I die of a heart attack at work my mom is going to kill me.” So I mad a u-turn and headed back to the Emergency room close to my house. After a very quick chat with the admitting nurse I was rushed to a bed. Apparently they take “I’ve had chest pain for a week and it has gotten severe” very seriously. Once again my blood pressure was crazy person high. I wasn’t having a heart attack but they were extremely worried. I made a pact and promise with them that if they didn’t admit me I would go to the cardiologist the next day. I really didn’t want to spend the night in the hospital. Of course I had a HMO so getting to the cardiologist the next day was a whole different headache.

Speaking of headache … for years I had been hearing my dad’s story of how the medicine they gave them at the Las Vegas emergency room caused him the worse headache of his life. Unlike me my dad doesn’t get migraines and doesn’t even really get headaches so I figured he was exaggerating. Just like a man … right? My dad just happened to be sitting next to me when the nurse rubbed nitroglycerin on my chest. Eager to show his knowledge and help me my dad explained that nitroglycerin is what had given him the worse headache of his lifetime but did help the whole “having a heart attack” problem. Again I rolled my eyes. Come on. How bad could it be. HOLLY FUCKING SHIT (excuse the language but it is necessary to convey the pain). Headache is not the right word. Alien beings trying to eat my brains and claw their way out of my head … that’s what I experienced. It didn’t go away fast either. My cardiologist (when I finally got in to see him the next day after a number of long dramatic phone calls) gave me nitroglycerin pills to carry with me. Whenever I had chest pain I had to weigh the option of death due to a possible heart attack vs. mind numbing headache pain.

The most fascination thing I learned in class last night? Nitroglycerin plus Viagra equals death. So there you go gentlemen. Don’t get all shy and embarrassed when asked what medicines you take by the paramedics. If you take Viagra you better tell them or you may die from a teeny tiny little white pill slipped under your tongue. In fact to be safe you should probably get a medical bracelet saying you take Viagra. You know … just in case.

(Everyone should know basic CPR. I took my CPR class at the local community college. To find a class near you go to the American Heart Association website http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/CPRAndECC/CPR_UCM_001118_SubHomePage.jsp)
